' • LETTERS .... 4 ARTS ••••. 19 SPORTS .•. 21 AP~ 5 1979 Fronska, lien hono----in recognitio nquet Two persons who spent nearly 90 years serving l\AC and the Flagstaff community were honored at the Honors Recognition banquet March 29. Martin G. Fronske, a pioneer Flagstaff and :\AC physician. and Agnes M. Allen, former dean of arts and science were honored by NAU J'rEsident J. Lawrence Walkup in the Academic Center Student Union Ballroom. Walkup formally named NAU's Health Center in honor of Fronske. Also the Uruversity Quad dormitory was named in honor of Allen. Fronske came to Flagstaff in 1914 and in treated more than three hundred students in a major flu epidemic. He became the ~AU team doctor for manv vears, and was a member of a school board es.tablished to investigate starting a local high school. Allen came to Flagstaff in 1934 and eventually became head of :'\AU's science department before becoming dean of arts and science, which she served for many years. Also at the banquet, Walkup inducted former Arizona Board of Regents members Norman G. Sharber. and Mrs. Margaret M. Christy. into the NAU Academv of Fellows. This honor awarded by ]\AU to persons in a managerial or professional role in society who have given outstanding service to ~AU in the improvement of education. This is the highest honor the university may bestow on an individual which does not require approval by the Arizona Board of Regents. Sharber. of Flagstaff, was a regentfrom to 1974. and Mrs. Christy, of Sedona. was a regent from 1970 to 197:>. Also at the banquet. Walk'up presented a certificate of appreciation to Donald L. Wolf. director of the NAU Marching Band. The universit~ · honored the band for its many hours of service and entertainment to the NAU communitv. Walkup also honored 13 NAU academic departments and units for superior achievement. The criteria for this honor is service rendered to students. records of the accomplishments of graduates, placement of graduates and professional accomplishments of facultv . Chairpersons accepting plaques on behalf of their departments were. Craig W. Sidles. psychology : Charles 0 . Minor. dean. school of forestry : James R. Wick. biological sciences ; Augustus S. Cotera. geology : Joe F. Goetz Jr., accounting : Pat B. Curry, music. Other departments honored were history and political science. William · H. Lyon: journalism. Ray C. Newton: police science. Wesley ~-l!(llli-.-'Jiilllt'~~~·~t.tL'f~j.,J Brown Jr.: special education, Dale H. Harper; · dental hygiene. LaNore Robertson; medical radiography. Don Q. Paris: and microbiology, Walter Appelgren. Each department was presented with a plaque commemorating the recognition of the department and displaying a photograph of the department faculty. Walkup was joined by Ktecutive Vice President Virgil W. Gillenwater and Academic Vice President Eugene M. Hughes in presenting the plaques. More than 400 people attended the banquet.
