Description
BIOGRAPHICAL
HISTORY
: In
November
of
1962
,
Tad
Nichols
drove
from
Tucson
,
Arizona
to
Blanding
,
Utah
where
he
met
Frank
Wright
for
yet
another
trip
on the
Colorado
River
through
Glen
Canyon
.
After
meeting
with
Woody
Edgell
and
Gay
Staveley
and his
father
at
Hite
Ferry
,
Tad
and
Frank
set
off
in
Tad's
boat
, the '
Andy.
'
Days
were
quiet
and
calm
;
nights
were
long
and
cold
, with
frost
covering
everything
in the
mornings
. On their
second
day
of the
trip
,
Thanksgiving
Day
,
Tad
records
in his
journal
that he '
Cant
clean
off
Andy
this
morn--
the
sponges
are
frozen
solid.
' He also
records
their
Thanksgiving
dinner
: '
Sherry
,
caviar
.
Swiss
onion
soup
.
Rose
wine
.
Chicken
roasted
in
Dutch
oven
.
Lima
beans
.
Cranberries.
' Of
note
on this
trip
were the
numerous
waterfalls
in the
canyon
(due
to
all
the
rains)
, and also the
plentiful
beaver
along
the
river
. The
men
had '
seen
several
,
one
family
of
six
in a
nest.
' From
November
21
to
November
28
,
Frank
and
Tad
built
many
driftwood
fires
for
warmth
and
took
lots
of
pictures
of '
sunset
light
on
river
cliffs
with
waterfall
streaks.
'
One
different
feature
of this
trip
was the
scenery
they
encountered
at the
end
. There were '
Bedouin
tents
etc. at the
landing
' and '
elaborate
sets
for
Jerusalem
,
Nazareth
, etc.
along
the
road
to
Wahweap.
' These
odd
sights
were
due
to the
filming
of the
movie
'The
Greatest
Story
Ever
Told.
