Aboard the USS Augusta Enroute to Antwerp. The President lunches with Richard Stowell, Seaman, First Class, in the crew's mess. July 7-15, 1945. The Crew Rated Their Commander-in-Chief a 'Four-Oh' Sailor. For his trip to the Big Three meeting with Churchill and Stalin, President Truman chose an 'old salt' of many historic occasions, the USS Augusta. The Commander-in-Chief wasted little time in getting 'squared away' aboard the heavy cruiser. He was all over the ship, from bridge to engine room, making informal inspections.
