Syria - Palmyra. The Street of Giant Pillars. This mile-long street with 375 columns on each side, was the business artery of ancient Palmyra, capital of Queen Zenobia's empire. A thriving caravan city in the 1st and 3rd centuries A.D., it was destroyed by the Romans in 273. [Caption by Josef Muench]
