West side of the Meteor Crater Observatory, 1937 alignment of Route 66, east of Winslow,AZ, April 2005. The Observatory was open to the public in the 1930s, and was built and operated by Harry William Locke. The observatory continued in operation under Dr. Harvey Harlow Nininger throughout the 1940s, surviving as a Route 66 attraction until bypassed by the 1949 alignment. The observatory is mentioned in Jack Rittenhouse's, A Guide Book to Highway 66.
