P.T. Reilly entering Duebendorff [Deubendorff] Rapid in the heart of Grand Canyon. These flat-bottomed cataract boats are made from 9/16 marine plywood, with hickory chines and ribs. They are 16 feet long, 5 1/2 beam and 20 inches deep. There are seven water tight compartments. Empty, the boats weigh 650 lbs; when fully loaded, with boatman and two passengers, 1400 lbs. Bulk and weight are of major consideration and the load must be evenly balanced. [7-23-49]
