BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY : From 1927 to 1929 , Clyde Kluckhohn led three expeditions to the area around Kaiparowits Plateau (also known as Wild Horse Mesa) on the Navajo Nation . It is claimed that prior to these trips no Anglo person had ever ventured this deep into the reservation . Kluckhohn later wrote Beyond the Rainbow , which describes these expeditions . James J . Hanks was a member of the expeditions , acting as the primary photographer for the expeditions . The group included Lauri Sharp , Bill Gernon , and Nel Hagen . All were undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin at the time of the trips .
