One might wonder why we didn't run this rapid. The were two powerful reasons for caution. Primarily, our kayaks were Folbots - kayaks with wooden dowel frames and canvas hulls. They were very fragile and heavily loaded. If we lost one, we could lose food, water, clothing, bedding and tools. More important, there was no way out of the canyon except at Lee's Ferry, and that was along way down the river. Also, the configuration of the river was such that we could not carefully observe the rapids and plan a relatively safe passage.
