BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY: Frank Wright, Tad Nichols, Katie Lee, and Marty Koehler drove to Hite Ferry on September 1, 1957 and camped. At 10AM the next day they started down the Colorado River, which was running at 20,000 CFS 'with much mud and silt.' They stopped for lunch 'under willows, where a bullsnake was pulled from the tree branches.' At Olympia Bar, Tad collected scraps from an abandoned mining operation and 'erected a mobile from the old iron.' Also notable on this trip were the often spectacular light displays on the cliff walls-- from the sunrises, the sunsets, the full moon, and from their own campfires. On some nights, they even saw a 'good display [of] red aurora lights' overhead. In addition to using his regular cameras, Tad also took a number of photographs with his stereo camera on this trip. |
