Description
BIOGRAPHICAL
HISTORY
: In a
diary
kept
by
Tad
Nichols
during
this
trip
, he
reveals
that on
May
17
,
1960
, he
flew
to
Hite
,
where
he
met
boatmen
Earl
Johnson
and
Jack
Hay
.
Before
they
headed
out
with their
passengers
in a '
fast
current,
' they were
interviewed
by
Paul
Baker
for the
San
Juan
News
. On
May
19th
,
Tad
writes
'
After
b'fast
Earl
&
I

to
gold
diggings
.
Gerheart
[Gerhart]
camp
.
Scavenged

,

' He also
mentions
that
upon
return
to their
camp
'
another
boat
had
come
in with
Art
Chaffin
&
Bur
.
Land

.
surveyors
.
Art
told
of his
work
at
Cal
.
Bar
' in the
early
1920s
.
Tad
related
a
few
more
stories
about
this
particular
trip
during
an
interview
in
1997
. He
admitted
that he
didn't
know
any of the
passengers
; he had
just
gone
along
to
take
pictures
.
One
picture
he
particularly
liked
was of an
image
that
appeared
on the
face
of a
cliff
. He
saw
it
as a '
chariot
with the
fringe
on
top
,
pulled
by
flying
horses..
. In
certain
lights
,
it's
beautiful
and
perfect..
. A
little
imagination
, but
it's
there.
' He also
mentioned
one
notable
event
that
took
place
during
this
trip--
an
airdrop
of
food
at
Forbidding
Bar
.
Tad
remarked
'
I
think
it
was
somebody's
birthday..
.
Oh
,
my
, the
ice
cream
was
frozen
. Had
steaks
and
ice
cream
that
night
-
it
was a
treat
-
particularly
after
having
walked
to
Rainbow
Bridge
that
day.
