BIOGRAPHICAL
HISTORY
:
Hubert
R
. '
Bert
'
Lauzon
, was
born
in
Quebec
and
raised
in
southern
Colorado
. He
arrived
at the
Grand
Canyon
around
1910
and
worked
as a
guide
for
William
Wallace
Bass
,
whose
tourist
business
and
camp
benefitted
from
Lauzon's
knowledge
of
horses
,
ranching
, and
outdoor
skills
.
Late
in
1911
,
Bert
joined
the
Kolb
brothers
on a
portion
of their
historic
Grand
Canyon
Colorado
River
run
. In
1916
or
1917
,
Lauzon
married
the
Bass's
eldest
child
,
Edith
. The
couple
had
three
children
. The
marriage
ended
with
Edith's
death
.
Three
years
later
,
Bert
married
Rosa
White
.
During
his
years
at
Grand
Canyon
, he
bred
and
trained
horses
, and
ran
cattle
. From
1919
until
1928
, he was
employed
by
Coconino
County
as
caretaker
for the
Bright
Angel
Trail
, and also
during
roughly
that
same
time
period
, he
served
as
Justice
of the
Peace
for the
Grand
Canyon
District
. In
1928
, he was
elected
Grand
Canyon
Constable
, a
position
he
resigned
the
following
year
when
he was
hired
as a
ranger
by the
National
Park
Service
.
Lauzon
retired
from the
Park
Service
in
1951
. He
died
a
few
months
later
.
