BIOGRAPHICAL
HISTORY
: In
1980
the
National
Park
Service
announced
that the
wild
burros
that had
lived
and
reproduced
in the
Grand
Canyon
since
the
late
1880s
were
endangering
native
plants
and
animals
and would have to be
destroyed
.
Hearing
this,
Cleveland
Amory
,
founder
of The
Fund
for
Animals
came
up
with a
plan
to
safely
and
humanely
remove
the
burros
.
Over
the
course
of
several
months
,
approximately
580
feral
burros
were
removed
from
Grand
Canyon
. The
burros
were
transported
to a
preserve
in
Texas
and
adopted
out
. The
lower
canyon
herds
,
about
100
burros
, were
removed
by
helicopters
and
boats
between
Jan
.
9
,
1981
and
Jan
.
28
,
1981
.
Among
those
who
assisted
in
transporting
the
wild
burros
by
river
